The Pelvis

The Pelvis.
Check the inner and outer margins of the main pelvic rim.
Check the two secondary rings.
Compare the width of bothe SI joints. They will vary if the pelvis is not a true AP pelvis.
Look at the symphysis pubis. Check the width of the synchondrosis, (it should be approximately 5mm)especially in trauma.
Look at the sacrum and L5. Any disruption of the lines in the sacrum may indicate a sacral fracture. L5 should always be checked as it is not uncommon for someone to fracture the transverse processes after a fall.
Look at the acetabulum. If you can't see a neck of femur fracture in an elderly patient chances are there is an acetabular fracture.
